Structured Pseudospectra and Random Eigenvalues Problems in Vibrating Systems

چکیده
This paper introduces the concept of pseudospectra as a generalized tool for uncertainty quantification and propagation in structural dynamics. Different types of pseudospectra of matrices and matrix polynomials are explained. Particular emphasis is given to structured pseudospectra for matrix polynomials, which offer a deterministic way of dealing with uncertainties for structural dynamic systems. The pseudospectra analysis is compared with the results from Monte Carlo simulations of uncertain discrete systems. Two illustrative example problems, onewith probabilistic uncertaintywith various types of statistical distributions and the otherwith interval type of uncertainty, are studied in detail. Excellent agreement is found between the pseudospectra results andMonte Carlo simulation results.

Structured Pseudospectra for Polynomial Eigenvalue Problems, with Applications
Pseudospectra associated with the standard and generalized eigenvalue problems have been widely investigated in recent years. We extend the usual definitions in two respects, by treating the polynomial eigenvalue problem and by allowing structured perturbations of a type arising in control theory. We explore connections between structured pseudospectra, structured backward errors, and structure...
متن کاملMultiplicities of the structured pseudoeigenvalues
The structured pseudospectra of a matrix A are sets of complex numbers that are eigenvalues of matrices X which are near to A and have the same entries as A at a fixed set of places. The sum of multiplicities of the eigenvalues of X inside each connected component of the structured pseudospectra of A does not depend on X. This fact is known, but not so much as it should be. For this reason, we ...
متن کاملStructured Pseudospectra for Small Perturbations
In this paper we study the shape and growth of structured pseudospectra for small matrix perturbations of the form A A∆ = A + B∆C, ∆ ∈ ∆, ‖∆‖ ≤ δ. It is shown that the properly scaled pseudospectra components converge to non-trivial limit sets as δ tends to 0. We discuss the relationship of these limit sets with μ-values and structured eigenvalue condition numbers for multiple eigenvalues.
متن کاملMore on pseudospectra for polynomial eigenvalue problems and applications in control theory
Definitions and characterizations of pseudospectra are given for rectangular matrix polynomials expressed in homogeneous form: P(α, β) = αAd + αd−1βAd−1 + · · · + βA0. It is shown that problems with infinite (pseudo)eigenvalues are elegantly treated in this framework. For such problems stereographic projection onto the Riemann sphere is shown to provide a convenient way to visualize pseudospect...
متن کاملApproximated structured pseudospectra
Pseudospectra and structured pseudospectra are important tools for the analysis of matrices. Their computation, however, can be very demanding for all but small matrices. A new approach to compute approximations of pseudospectra and structured pseudospectra, based on determining the spectra of many suitably chosen rank-one or projected rank-one perturbations of the given matrix is proposed. The...
